Small Business Saturday originally started out in the United States to promoted local brick and mortar shops and business and encourage consumers to ‘shop local’ and support small businesses in their communities. It would normally fall on the first Saturday after Black Friday, which is in November alongside the American Thanksgiving holiday. The day itself takes place on the first Saturday in December each year, but the campaign aims to have a lasting impact on small businesses. In 2017 Small Business Saturday is on Saturday, December 2nd.
In the UK, Small Business Saturday customers also go out and support all types of small businesses, online, in offices and in stores. Many small businesses take part in the day by hosting events and offering discounts. In South Africa, we have decided that small business should not have to wait a full year to showcase the great products they have tot offer the consumer. We believe that small businesses should be promoted each month to raise awareness and build support.
